I've never taken part in RPGaDAY, though I've been following other creators as they cover prompt on blogs and podcasts for years. #RPGaDAY seeks to bring positivity through interesting discussion centered on a specific prompt for each day of August. I'll be going through the prompts on a weekly basis and all thoughts offered are those of myself, Joe Salvador, and not those of Raven God Games LLC and we are not connected to any of the games or companies mentioned. Links are provided for your convenience only.

You can learn more about RPGaDAY here.

DAY 1: 1st RPG Purchased in 2024: Swords & Wizardry White Box. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love S&W and specifically White Box and when Matt Finch released a new, post-OGL-meltdown-version, I was certainly on board! WB is an OSR game that offers everything you need for classic role-playing in a small, easy to use package.

DAY 2: Most Recently Played: Reaver Sword & Sorcery RPG. Of course, I've most recently run my own playtest of Reaver. I've been running an ongoing campaign, called Spears in the Mist, while developing the game. The campaign pits the characters against a usurper, a cult of sorcerers, and their nefarious allies, and has taken them from escaping a city under siege, through the cursed Valley of the Mists, and now to the battlefield. My esteemed players have provided an enormous wealth of both fun and feedback and I'll be forever in their debt, I'm so thankful for you guys! You can hear occassional recaps on Nerd's RPG Variety Cast, The GMologist Presents, and Hindsightless.

DAY 3: Most Often Played RPG. This is a tough one. Recently, its certainly been Reaver. However, historically, its probably Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition...we played the hell out of that game in our school days and I doubt any game, except possibly D&D 3E, ever caught up.

DAY 4: RPG with Great Art. I have to offer two here, but for the same reason. First is Symbaroum, with its surreal paintings, and second is the first edition of Hyperborea, with its pencil-and-charcoal style. What connects these games is that they are both filled with the art of a single artist, offering a consistency throughout the books that helps create a sense of what the world looks like and how it feels in the mind of the reader.

Day 5: RPG with Great Writing: Hyperborea. Again, Hyperborea! The authorship of Jeffrey Talanian simply sparks the imagination and I've said in the past that, along with Delving Deeper and S&W White Box, Hyperborea is one of the games that inspired me to become a creator. Jeff's unique prose is reminiscent of both Gygax and pulp writers and truly shines in his world-building; such a joy to read.

Day 6: RPG that is Easy to Use: Shadowdark. I have yet to run Shadowdark, but it's straightforward mechanic should be familiar to most gamers and is presented in a slick, control panel format that makes the book easy to navigate.

Day 7: RPG with Good Form: Black Sword Hack. I'm giving this one to Black Sword Hack, not only due to its clean layout and consistent surrealist art, but also because of its actual physical form---I love digest-sized games! BSH is---A5 I think---and has thick glossy pages, its a pleasure to hold.
